About Us

A size 12 is not a size 12

Here's something every woman who shops online already knows, and no retailer likes to talk about.

Take a size 12 from five different British high street brands and measure the waistbands. You'll find a spread of several inches. Not a rounding error — a genuinely different garment wearing the same number.

There's no legal standard behind UK dress sizing. There's a British Standard, but it's voluntary, decades old, and largely ignored. Every retailer draws its own block, adjusts it to whoever it thinks its customer is, and prints a number on the label.

Which means the number tells you almost nothing. And when you're buying online, the number is most of what you've got.

What we do about it

We can't fix the industry. What we can do is stop pretending the number is enough.

Every product page carries actual measurements — garment measurements, in centimetres and inches, not just a size chart with a range. Bust, waist, hip, length. The things you'd check yourself if the garment were in front of you.

We fit across the size range, not on a single sample. A pattern that comes together beautifully on one size and collapses on the others isn't finished, and we don't take it.

And you can just ask us. Tell us the size you usually wear, which brand it's from, and what you're deciding between. You'll get a straight answer from someone who has handled the garment — including "this one runs small, go up" or "this isn't the right cut for what you're describing."

We'd rather talk you out of the wrong size than process the return. It's cheaper for both of us and considerably less annoying for you.

How we choose what to stock

Fabric before photograph. Composition and weight tell you how something will drape, how it'll behave in the wash, and whether it'll still look like itself in a year. A photograph tells you none of that.

Cuts that work on real bodies. Sitting, reaching, moving. A dress that looks right standing still and wrong the moment you sit down is a badly cut dress.

Pieces that go more than one place. The top that works for the office and for dinner. The dress you'd wear to a wedding in June and to a lunch in September without it reading as a different occasion.

Plenty doesn't clear those three. That's why the collection stays small enough that we've handled every piece in it.

On "timeless"

Every clothing brand claims it, so the word has largely stopped meaning anything.

What we mean by it is narrow and practical: a piece you'll still reach for in three years, because nothing about it announces the season it came from. A particular sleeve, a specific hemline, a colour that was everywhere for six months — those are what date a garment, and they're avoidable if you're paying attention when you buy.

Some of what we stock is quiet. Some of it isn't. What they share is that none of it will look like 2026 in 2029.

What we don't do

Chase trends. By the time one reaches the shops it's already fading, and buying into it guarantees a wardrobe that expires on a schedule.

Inflate prices to discount them. The price is the price. It doesn't get marked up in September so it can be marked down in October.

Overpromise. A dress will not change your life. What good clothes actually do is quieter — you stop noticing them. No adjusting in the mirror, no second-guessing at the door, no thought about whether it suits the room you're walking into.

That's the whole ambition. Not transformation. Just the quiet of being properly dressed and free to think about something else.
